Real Talk: A Program for Young Men to Prevent Sexual Violence

Real Talk is a transformative, evidence-based program designed to foster lasting change in the way young men understand, discuss, and engage with issues of sexual violence. Developed through my research project during my Masters in Counselling, this program is rooted in a primary prevention model, aiming to address the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to sexual violence before they even begin.

Program Overview

Real Talk is more than just an educational program; it is a powerful tool for behavioural change. Led by qualified Counsellors, it uses an experiential approach, engaging students not only intellectually but also emotionally and practically. We focus on engaging the head, heart, and hands to ensure that young men are fully immersed in the process and empowered to make real, lasting changes in their thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.

Program Framework: Head, Heart, and Hands

  • Head: We explore the knowledge young men need to understand the complexities of sexual violence.

  • Heart: We delve into the emotional aspects, encouraging empathy, self-awareness, and vulnerability.

  • Hands: Real Talk provides the practical tools and strategies young men need to take action.

Safe, Supportive, and Experiential Learning

One of the key aspects of Real Talk is its commitment to co-creating a safe, non-judgmental space where young men can feel secure to explore their thoughts and experiences.

By fostering a culture of safety and respect, we create an environment that allows for honest conversations and exploration of tough topics.

A Focus on Lasting Change

Unlike traditional programs that only focus on education, Real Talk is designed to bring about sustainable behavioral change. Our approach is grounded in the belief that real change happens when young men are actively engaged in the process.

Why Real Talk?

  • Evidence-Based: The program is grounded in research and proven strategies for behavior change.

  • Run by Qualified Counsellors: Facilitators are trained professionals who bring expertise, empathy, and understanding to the program.

  • Primary Prevention: We focus on preventing violence before it starts by changing attitudes and behaviors in young men.

  • Experiential and Interactive: The program is dynamic, engaging, and designed to foster real, personal connection and growth.

  • Safe and Supportive Environment: We create a space for young men to explore sensitive topics without fear of judgment or shame.
